The Pathans inhabit the mountainous regions and valleys of Afghanistan and the North West Frontier and Balochistan Province of neighboring Pakistan - a region that has provided the western access to the Indian sub-continent for millennia. The Pathans are a fiercely independent and autonomous people and are considered to be noted warriors. Legends claim that they are either descendants of soldiers that came with Alexander the Great or the lost tribe of Israel.

The Pathans have a rich cultural history and are very hospitable people. Their women are skilled workers and take great pride in their work. They use vibrant colors and embroidery in clothing for their families, wall hangings and cushion covers for their homes and present such gifts to their esteemed guests. Different Pathan tribes are recognized by their embroideries as well.

Tribe Vardag was established in collaboration with a local Afghan/Pakistani non-governmental organization, which has worked with Afghan refugee women for more than 25 years. Tribe Vardag aims to find markets for the handmade products produced by these artisans in an appropriate, ethical and sustainable way so as to enable them to become self sufficient and stop relying on handouts.

Tribe Vardag assists the Pathan artisans from Afghanistan and Pakistan in marketing their products in the United States of America. The focus is on low income generating women currently living in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan and also the rural areas of north-west Pakistan. Part of the revenue generated by these sales goes back to the community. Our purchasing policy is based upon fair pricing and it is very important to us that no artisans are treated unfairly. We hope that you enjoy their gifts to you and be part of keeping alive the tradition of beautiful Pathan embroidery.
